Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the outset, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have many individuals battling for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand.
